Anne: “Those years have shaped us. I thought I loved you then, but I know I love you now.”

Have you ever made a choice that has left you feeling broken? I have... And yet, I firmly believe that we are all stronger and more beautiful for have been broken and rebuilt. There are many reasons for this. Our “brokenness” often allows us to connect with others. It enables us to choose what pieces we want to keep as we put ourselves back together, and the cracks can let light shine through. In many ways, being broken allows us to become more whole. Though difficult, I believe we should celebrate the flaws and missteps in our lives, because they shape us and help us “become”.

I have been greatly inspired by Kintsugi throughout the process of working on this production. “Kintsugi is the practice of repairing porcelain fractures with gold. It follows then, that breaks and repairs are part of the history of an object and must be shown and not hidden. They manifest its transformation; the scars embellish the objects, and it becomes an entirely new work of art.

Kintsugi honors the breaks, and treats them as an important part of the history of the object. It teaches us that a broken object is not something disposable, but instead is something more precious than it was before.”
